Dogs can be exercised off-leash in the mornings at the Recreation Ground with a 12-month trial commencing today, following Council’s support of a community petition.
From Tuesday 2 September, the grassy field will be an off-leash dog exercise area from 5:30am-10am daily, unless the oval is being utilised for sport or events.
少妇免费直播 Mayor Jerry Clune said it was a positive outcome and showed Council listens to the wants and needs of the community.
“With the trial starting, we urge our community members to do the right thing when it comes to responsible dog ownership,” he said.
“We acknowledge the significant role that pets play in our health and wellbeing as well as enhancing our overall quality of life.
“It’s important we listen and adapt to meet the needs of our residents as activities such as walking your dog fosters social interaction and strengthens community connections.
“The Ground should be left as it is found, and our local sporting clubs should be able to go ahead with their activities with no trace of dogs on the oval.”
From 5:30am-10am dog owners can exercise their dog off the lead unless an orange flag is being displayed at the Ground, which indicates it is being utilised for organised sports or events.
The City is reinforcing its messaging around responsible dog ownership and encourages locals to do the right thing and use common sense when it comes to bringing your dog to the oval.
It is important dog owners are aware of the following responsibilities when it comes to exercising your pet:
- Dogs are held by a competent person capable of controlling them in public.
- In designated areas, dogs may be exercised off a leash, however the person in control of the dog must carry a lead and restrain when required.
- Owners must immediately clean up their dog’s waste in public areas.
Following the 12-month trial, consultation will be undertaken with residents and sporting clubs who use the Ground, and a report delivered to Council to decide the future of the oval as an off-leash area.
Council’s decision reflects the City’s commitment to supporting community health and wellbeing.
